The Holy Spirit who makes us one with God and the gift of tongues.
Matthew 15:21-28
'Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.'
The Blessings of our Lord are reserved for His Children, However, when others pray in faith, they will get some miracles. These miracles are a testament of how great a God He is. These miracles are to magnify His Name.
If you are satisfied with miracles, you may not receive any after a while. You must progress to become a child of God. The best of the blessings are reserved for His Children. Only children could enter the eternal rest of Heaven.
In this world, parents let their children live in their house for as long as it pleases them. Other kids of relatives and friends may visit them but will not have the same access as children do. They will also not get a permanent stay. Similarly, to stay for eternity in Heaven one should become a “Child of God”.
Children will possess characteristics similar to those of their parents. Even adopted kids, by virtue of being with the parents long enough, take on the parents' characters over time. This transformation of becoming in the likeness of God is done by the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
This is precisely why Jesus said in John 3:5 “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. '
Today, many Christians do not believe in the Holy Spirit or accept the biblical form of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Many Christians are divided about the nature of the tongues spoken by believers after they have received the Holy Spirit. Some become unbelievers because they do not understand the utterances. They cite Acts 2:4-6, where the people around the apostles understood the language – tongues, spoken after the apostles received the Holy Spirit.
The Bible provides several key passages that describe the nature of tongues spoken by people anointed by the Holy Spirit. Here are some important verses:
1. The First Occurrence – Pentecost
Acts 2:4-6 (KJV)"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language."
This passage shows that the tongues spoken at Pentecost were known human languages, understood by people from different nations.
2. Tongues as a Spiritual Gift
1 Corinthians 12:10 (KJV)"To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues."
This verse highlights that speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and it can come in different forms.
1 Corinthians 14:2 (KJV)"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."
Here, Paul distinguishes between speaking in tongues as a personal, spiritual communication with God versus tongues that are understood by others.
3. The Purpose of Tongues
1 Corinthians 14:4-5 (KJV)"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying."
Speaking in tongues is for personal edification unless it is interpreted to edify the church.
1 Corinthians 14:27-28 (KJV)"If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God."
This passage provides order for the use of tongues in a church setting, emphasizing the need for interpretation.
4. A Sign for Unbelievers
1 Corinthians 14:22 (KJV)"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe."
Speaking in tongues serves as a sign for unbelievers, showing the power of God.
5. Jesus’ Promise About Tongues
Mark 16:17 (KJV)"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues."
Jesus mentioned that speaking in new tongues would be one of the signs that accompany believers.
These verses illustrate that speaking in tongues can be:
A supernatural ability to speak known languages (Acts 2:4-6).
A spiritual gift that requires interpretation (1 Corinthians 12:10, 14:27-28).
A means of personal edification and prayer (1 Corinthians 14:2, 14:4).
A sign for unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22).
Also, if one does a google search of “ how many spoken languages are there in the world” – we get a staggering 7,111 for an answer. The tongues could be from any of these. Also the languages of the world came into being in Genesis 11:1-9, where the Bible clearly states in verse 9, “ because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.”.
When our Almighty God can create languages for the people in one moment during the period of Genesis, the same God through the Holy Spirit could create a new tongue or one among that which already exists in this world today. Mark 16: 17, Jesus himself said “they shall speak with new tongues.”
God divided people in Genesis 11, and now the people shall be united by the Holy Spirit unto the Father - Ephesians 2:14-18 (KJV)"For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father."
I have received the Holy Spirit, by His Grace, with the ability to speak in tongues many years ago. And the utterances have changed over a period of time as I have grown closer to God. When I Speak in tongues, I can sense the power of the Holy Spirit filling me. I wish you the reader to receive this Grace from our Almighty God and be transformed into His CHILD.
Only when you experience the filling and overpowering of the Holy Spirit over your body and soul could you really understand the power that comes with this blessing - the Power of being the child of the most powerful supernatural being. Even if you as a child did not understand that you cannot breathe under water, would have understood the same when you went under water the first time, I wish and Pray that you experience the immersion into the Holy Spirit soon.
Praise the Lord.
Glory be to Jesus.
